Why is the introductory course devoted to drawing and design rather than painting?

Leonardo Da Vinci used to say if you couldn’t draw, you would never have anything worth painting. Like in building a house, you don’t start with the roof, but lay the foundation. After you Foundation for Art is expanded and reinforced, we build on it in the second course, going into oils or digital media or even photography for example, at the student’s discretion.
