With triple budget deficits at the federal, state and local level, governments will need significant help from the private sector to cope successfully with an outbreak. The Institute aims to build partnerships that help businesses think beyond the next major public health emergency. For example, during a crisis, a strong sense of cohesion usually develops within communities. Laws and policies can change rapidly during the short period after a crisis – for example: the formation of the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Government’s $1 billion appropriation for grants to improve public health infrastructure.
