Why is the FPL Glades Power Park project needed?
FPL’s 35-county Florida service area is made up of some of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Residents are increasing the size of their homes and their everyday use of electricity with more computers, electronics and household appliances. As a result, our residential customers now use, on average, 30 percent more electricity per household than they did 20 years ago even with more conservation and energy efficient homes. To meet the state’s growing demand for electricity, FPL is adding new power generating units nearly every year. So, for example, new generating units were added in Lee, Volusia, Manatee and Martin counties in the first half of this decade. Now we are working to add new power generating units in Miami-Dade to begin serving customers in 2007 and in Palm Beach County to begin serving customers in 2009 and 2010. Next, we have determined that we need a new power plant in Glades County to begin serving customers in 2012 and 2013.
