WHY IS THE FLATWOODS SALAMANDER BEING PROPOSED FOR LISTING?
Survey efforts conducted since 1990 for flatwoods salamanders have located only about 50 scattered populations. Pine flatwoods habitat, upon which the salamander depends, has been reduced to less than 20% of its historical extent. That which remains continues to decline in amount and quality. After reviewing data on population status, habitat quantity and quality, and potential threats for the species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that the flatwoods salamander qualified for threatened status under the Endangered Species Act.
