Why is the district proposing to use artificial turf at Zeeland Stadium?
Using artificial turf would greatly increase the use of the stadium field, which must handle a double football schedule when the high schools have separate teams in 2005-2006. Plus, artificial turf is sturdy enough to handle everyday use whether it is sports practice, band practice, or a football game. By installing artificial turf, the district does not have to purchase land and construct a second stadium, which would cost millions. Zeeland is proposing to use FieldTurf, a product that is used successfully at Holland Christian, the University of Michigan, and at Ford Field. It is a far cry from “AstroTurf,” the carpet-like playing surface introduced in the 1960’s which was installed over a concrete pad and contributed to player injuries. FieldTurf features millions of grass-like blades nestled in a bed of silica sand and rubber granules. Beneath the surface is a complete drainage system installed and guaranteed by the company.
