If we didn’t have meiosis, and everything reproduce purely by mitosis all cells would largely be clones of one another, and there would be no real genetic variation. Also, there would be a chromosome imbalance – meiosis is needed to create cells with half the normal amount of genetic info, so that it can fuse with another cell containing half, and bingo there is your zygote.
