Why is the Department of the Interior preparing a Strategic Plan?
A. First, it makes good management sense to have a document that clearly guides the organization along the course it must take to arrive at the goals it considers most important to achieve. Second, since 1993 when the Government Performance and Results Act was passed, Federal Agencies have been required to develop a strategic plan and periodically revise it (at least every three years) to update the plan and to compensate for changing conditions under which they operate. Secretary Salazar will use the strategic plan as a roadmap for the Department, and a means of communicating its goals and specific commitments to the public, stakeholders, and employees. It is also a means of strengthening our organizational ability to forge stronger connections between our goals and the type of work that must be done to achieve the promised results.
