Why is the Department of State issuing a new standard license plate to replace the blue license plate?
The blue license plate, with its white letters and numbers on a blue background, has a long history on Michigan roads, beginning in 1982. However, advances in manufacturing technology have made the blue plate’s “beads on paint” reflective surface obsolete. Plates today are made with lightweight, durable materials that are fully reflective, making them easier to see and identify, especially at night. Public Act 177 of 2006 requires the Department of State to stop issuing or transferring the blue plate and produce a new standard replacement plate using a “fully reflectorized material” beginning Jan. 1, 2007. The law was enacted at the request of law enforcement.
