It is legal in the United States to be a racist. The only laws restricting free speech are libel, slander, and “clear and present danger.” In the UK, there are laws which prohibit people from promoting racial hatred, which is interpreted in ways that prevent honest people from telling other people what they believe the truth is. In the US, there are (as yet) no such laws. Living here in West Virginia, I can be as much of a racist as I want to be, assuming that speaking and writing and gathering in a friendly way with like-minded people is what I do. Since there is no legal threat against racists, racists don’t feel obliged to be sneaky and underhanded. The laws cannot change a man’s honest opinion. All they can do is make him fear to express himself openly. The UK has some bad laws, and those laws were pushed on the country by people such as the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
