Why is the contract/grant information important to SDSMT?
Under federal law, the university is required to report to the government inventions created under government sponsored research. If SDSMT decides not to keep title to the invention (that is, decides not to keep it), then the government has the rights to it. In such a case, if the government does not wish to pursue the invention, it may be assigned back to the inventors if they should so wish. Nongovernmental sponsors may also have intellectual property clauses and obligations attached to their sponsorship with which the School must comply.
