Why is the City of Calgary running an Annual Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program?
The program was started because of the large volumes of leaves that are added to the regular garbage collection each fall. By using the program, residents help keep garbage collection crews on schedule during peak volumes of seasonal waste, extend the life of landfills, reduce the production of greenhouse gasses and recycle a natural resource into compost. The benefits of composting are: • It reduces your volume of waste, which saves valuable landfill space. • It enables you to reuse the composted material. • It recycles the nutrients back into the soil. • It minimizes the impact to the environment. • It increases the efficiency of our waste collection and disposal systems. • It makes it easier to work with Calgary’s heavy clay.
