Why is the CIEH launching an election manifesto?
We want to exert as much influence as we can on the next government and provide ideas to the new Parliament which will have many new MPs. We have set out our stall before at general elections but whatever the outcome, we face an important few years. We face public sector cuts, an economy that is struggling, but also what seem like intractable inequalities in health and the effects of climate change. The outcome of the election could be closer than was thought at one time, but the result could define the next decade for all of us. Without a recasting of society’s values, environmental health will not be exempt from the effects of this. The landscape in which we all operate could look very different within the next five years. All of the parties will be trying to persuade the electorate that they have the policies to revive the economy but it is not so clear how they aim to improve the health and welfare of the nation, and how they will gauge success.
