The City of Calgary ’30-in-30′ Water Efficiency goal is to accommodate Calgary’s continuing population growth with the same amount of water removed from the river as in 2003. A key way to meet this goal is water metering, where customers pay for the water they use, rather than having a flat rate for unlimited water usage. Calgary’s goal is to have all homes on water meters by year-end 2014. Currently, 82 per cent of residential accounts are on a water meter. Slower home sales and fewer flat rate accounts are generating fewer bylaw required meter installations. By starting mandatory installations two years earlier, Water Services will be better able to convert the entire city by 2014. The bylaw changes will allow Water Services to access remaining flat rate homes starting in 2010 and this will have no impact on water utility rates.
