Why is the BUC seeking Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification?
Given the recent steps to improve their fishery, the flatfish industry is eager to be evaluated by the MSC. This will involve a close look at the fishery through a transparent and systematic process and will apply scientific principles to assess such things as the soundness of stock assessments and the adequacy of measures to mitigate the environmental effects on the target and bycatch species as well as the overall ecosystem. The London-based council has previously reviewed and certified Alaska’s pollock, salmon and longline cod fisheries as sustainable and fishermen feel the MSC review will help distinguish Alaska from other flatfish fisheries around the world and prioritize areas where further improvement is needed.
