Why is the birth rate in greece so high or low ?
Apart from the abortion issue that is about the same the world over, the reason for a low birth rate in Greece is that most couples nowadays get married too old and they barely have the opportunity to have more than one child. Another factor,and the most important, is that the expenses for raising kids are extremely high and most couples can’t afford the cost. Also the amenities and the help that the Sate should provide to young parents is totally non existent and that makes cost of day-care facilities and preschool kindergartens a problem for both working parents that can’t cope with. In this case, the grandparents are called in to help, in the couples that that is possible. For the rest working couples it is also a drawback. Generally the State is not doing what it minimally should do for young couples and their off-springs.
