Why is the Bibliocentre spearheading this initiative and not a college or coordinating body?
This project started in 1998 at the Bibliocentre as a result of its effort to carry out its mandate as defined in the visioning exercise conducted over the previous 2 years. The visioning document, The Bibliocentre: A New Model for the Future, endorsed by the Committee of Presidents, directs the Bibliocentre in part to ” provide information technology services that support library services and student-centred learning and result in significant cost effectiveness and savings to individual colleges.” But due to the great disparity in resources among the colleges, it is difficult for the Bibliocentre to provide new services and improve current services. The best resolution path for this problem is to grow the infrastructure and TAP (Telecommunication Access Partnerships) from the Ministry of Energy Science and Technology can provide the means for this.
