Why is the Battery Gauge so Unreliable?

The battery gauge does NOT shows the percentage of charge left on the battery (as one would expect) but the percentage left from the last time you charged it!!! In other words, if you charge your phone for 5 minutes, then when you unplug it the gauge will show 100% as it has 100% of whatever it took in for that 5 min, but the battery may still only be quarter charged! It is not until you plug the phone into the charger that the gauge will show the real total charge left. (e.g it may show it has 50% of the last charge left, but when you plug it in it may drop to 5%). Seems stupid doesn’t it!! You have to leave the phone charging until you get the message “Charging complete” before you get a reliable reading of the total charge remaining – and avoid charging it for short periods! .
