Why is the base made with a rougher texture instead of a very smooth texture?
The Mark4 is manufactured with a slight ‘crinkle’ type of texture for several reasons. This choice was made due to surface finish durability issues. In the past we have used a smooth finish on our Mark2 Armrest and found that the finish scratched very easily. This became a problem so we switched to the crinkle finish. The second reason is when we tested the smooth finish, it did not hold paint as well. Since some ABS Plastic can be affected by UV Light, the base needs to be painted. A smooth finish would require the part to be sanded and then painted. In our testing, the marks from sanding came through the paint and detracted from the overall finish of the product. Overall, the crinkle finish is the best choice. Even though we apply four coats of paint to the Mark4 Console, the paint will scratch under abusive treatment. Under normal usage the paint should be very durable. Will the leather match? It is extremely difficult to match leather and even more difficult to match OEM BMW leathe
