On 7 December 2009 the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) agreed to establish a new, independent national regulator for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. The National VET Regulator will regulate the training sector to ensure national standards are met and strengthen quality assurance for more than 1.7 million students and thousands of Australian businesses committed to the sector. The regulator will be responsible for the registration and audit of registered training providers across Australia and accreditation of courses from 2011. On a national basis, all providers operating in more than one state or territory, or enrolling international students in post-secondary educational institutions, will be registered through the national regulator.
