Why is the australian Army slouch hat turned up on one side?
to prevent your rifle from striking the hat when the rifle was carried on the left hand side in the shoulder arms position, also the slouch hat can be worn brim down (grade two) for normal barracks wear, or turned up (grade one) for ceremonial wear. every body has at least two, for the differnt circumstances in 12 years of full time army i have never been inspected by a reviewing officer from the left. the normal order of inspection is to begin from the right hand side to the left hand side as dressing is usually carried out from the right, from the right marker, who is given a point on the parade ground to march to and then the rest of the formation take their cue from that point. be it a section, platoon, company or battalion.
