Why is the archive bit set in attributes when the file is not an archive?

This is a simple case of the same word having two different meanings. An archive is a file containing compressed files whereas the archive attribute simply means that the file is a copy. DOS, QD3 and other file managers set the archive attribute of the target file whenever a file is copied. The two meanings are totally different.
