Why is the archery season bucks only for the first 16 days, and why are Special Unit M Antlerless Only permits not valid in September?
Following a couple of bad winters beginning in 2007-08, the deer population in most of the state has decreased. To help the herd recover quicker, either-sex hunting days during the muzzleloader and firearm seasons have been reduced for 2010 in many units. To have bow hunters also help herd recovery, the 2010 archery season will be antlered bucks only from Sept. 15-31 statewide. Due to law enforcement concerns, this archery season change includes Unit M and also applies to Special Unit M Antlerless Only permits, which cannot be used until October 1 when the statewide archery season again becomes either-sex. Special Unit M permits can then be used at any time until December 15 during any season for which you are properly licensed. What’s up with the Long Island deer hunt? An annual archery hunt takes place on Long Island in Moultonboro, N.H. It is open only to bow hunters who have obtained written landowner permission on a form that can be picked up at Fish and Game headquarters in Conco
