Why is the American Football League compared to the Arena Football League?

You are missing the point of the comparison that was being made. The point is that if an Arena team took on an NFL team the Arena team would be expected to have no chance. It is like a Division 1A college taking on a Division 1AA school, sure Appy State beat Michigan but you play that game 10 times and Michigan should win the next 9, and should have won the first one. You have to remember though we are considering PRE-MERGER. This isn’t talking about AFC and NFC, this is AFL and NFL. I realize that people consider Namath good, but look at his numbers without the name, he wasn’t elite by a long shot. I would bet that prior to the merger the American Football League didn’t really get elite players. A better thought might be to think of this new league they want to start. That way it would be the same rules, but the lesser players. That’s why I’m saying think of Division 1A(yeah FBS) compared to Division 1AA(FCS). At the time the AFL was a lesser league.
