Why is the age of Enlightenment important to modern universities?
It affected all areas of life and all strata of society, not just academia. The Enlightenment brought about a shift from religion and community emphasis to self and secular emphasis. Science (which had made big strides in the 17th century) was applied to all aspects of life, the world, and human endeavor.
