Why is the 1100 mAh battery a tight fit on certain models of the 3rd Generation iPod?

There are a couple of things you can do to make the 1100 mAh battery fit inside a 3rd Generation iPod with a 20GB or 40GB hard drive. But if you want to avoid the extra steps, wed recommend the thinner but still long-lasting 850 mAh battery instead.
