Why is Sweetest Day a regional tradition?

I live in N.E. Ohio. We have Sweetest Day cards. It hasn’t been pushed as much this year — maybe because of the economy. I think it is regionally celebrated as you say. My husband won’t honor/follow Sweetest Day. He believes it is a made up holiday to get extra $ for the card makers, candy makers and florists. Our wedding anniversary is next week, so it’s not a big deal to us. And, Christmas is coming as well. We are spending what little extra money we have on the ‘big’ stuff- anniversaries and Christmas.
