Why is sustainability so important in design-build?
Pulaski: Projects focused on sustainability goals require an elevated degree of design and construction integration as well as interdisciplinary collaboration, which are the fundamental principles of design-build. Additionally, the relationship is highly reciprocal because design-build is an enabler of sustainability, as an integrated design process is an essential component to green building. DBIA: What experiences or challenges led you to write this guide? Pulaski: It has been my experience that most construction professionals associate sustainable building with simply recycling, the use of recycled materials, and sometimes energy efficiency. But for the most part, they feel that it has little or nothing to do with them when, in fact, contractors and subs may have the most amount of knowledge to contribute. This guide lays out the details of what sustainability means to the construction industry and what specific actions this industry can take to support sustainable building goals. D
