Why is STHS engaged in the Healthcare That Works initiative?

You’ve no doubt seen the recent media stories about how the downturn in the economy is affecting every hospital in Middle Tennessee – and virtually every hospital across the country, for that matter. Saint Thomas Health Services is no exception. We anticipate that until the economy recovers most healthcare providers, including STHS, will see a decline in demand for some services, a tightening of money for new projects, equipment and improvements, and an increase in the number of patients who do not pay their bills even as care for the poor and underinsured continues to rise. The pressures are real. There is not a major healthcare organization that is not closely examining every aspect of its operations in light of today’s economy as well as in anticipation of government action that will directly (and negatively) impact how much we are paid for the care we provide our patients. Knowing all this, our mission calls us to action. We are the caregivers and leaders entrusted with the future
