Why is spit tobacco education important to Montana schoolchildren?
The tobacco industry, in response to the Montana Clean Indoor Air Act and Tobacco-free Schools, has begun marketing spit tobacco aggressively to youth, including promoting candy-flavored products and sponsoring traditional Montana events like rodeos and fairs. Montana youth, particularly boys, are at great risk of falling into the trap of spit tobacco addiction. By the time Montana males reach their senior year in high school, 27 percent use spit tobacco. Indeed, the majority of tobacco users become addicted before they reach 18.
