Glue Sniffing is one of many names – eg Sniffing, Huffing, Tooting, Buzzing, Nosing collectively known as Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) Here as some facts *VSA & DEATH VSA kills on average of one person every week in the UK. In 2006 in 40% of VSA deaths there was no evidence of previous abuse. 75% of deaths are due to the direct toxic effects of the product abused. VSA kills more children and young people aged 10-15 than all illegal drugs put together. 77% of abuse occurs in the home and 55% of deaths occur in the home. Butane lighter refills continued to claim the most lives – linked to 80% of all VSA deaths. 5 deaths were due to the non-medical use of Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas). 7 deaths were due to Helium – these figures are not included in the VSA Report. From 2000 – 2006 the average annual fatality rate was 55 – most were under 18. Between 2000 – 2006 VSA killed more young people aged 10 – 15 than all illegal drugs put together.
