Why is Silicone used in premium wiper blades?

Silicone makes the rubber windshield wiper blade slide smoothly over the glass, which eliminates streaking and grabbing.

RainEx was the first company to offer silicone windshield treatment.  It works great but must be re-applied from time to time.  Piaa discovered that if you treat the windshield with silicone and also embed silicone in the blades, the lubrication lasts much longer – up to two years.

Silicone wiper blades cost about double what regular blades cost, but they work much better and last much longer, so the cost is justified.  There are some cheaper brands, but I have had great success with Piaa silicone wiper blades.

Silicone blades can withstand extreme temperature and weather conditions that normal rubber blades cannot. Our silicone blades can operate in temperatures ranging from -110°F to 350°F, giving them the durability to make it through the extremes of summer and winter, without sacrificing performance. Whereas many natural rubber blades need to be replaced every six months, our silicone blades can give you years of peak performance.
