Why is Selvin Young starting the season at running back when Jamaal Charles is clearly the better player?
Mack Brown is all about loyalty to leaders. But don’t read too much into this announcement. If Young isn’t producing, Charles will get most of the carries. As long as Young is producing and continuing to be a strong leader, he’ll get carries. I have to say Young looked good in training camp. He’s lost 25 pounds since the Rose Bowl (225 down to 200). He’s quicker and more shifty. This also might be a way for coaches to keep Charles hungry. Sometimes, young guys get too much acclaim too soon and stop listening to their coaches the way they used to. I can guarantee you the coaches were worried about Charles getting the big head after that Sports Illustrated cover. There’s no doubt Charles is the future, but the coaches want to see leadership and not celebrity from their young stars.
