Why is SCR less effective than cooled EGR and Particulate Filter for Tier 4 Interim?

• As part of Cummins Tier 4 Interim evaluation program, various combinations of Cummins Particulate Filter, cooled EGR and SCR were extensively tested as possible technology paths. However, our development work proved that a Cummins Particulate Filter in combination with cooled EGR provides the most effective Tier 4 Interim solution. This solution will achieve the best operating value for our customers. It offers equivalent, or better fuel efficiency improvements compared with using an SCR system for off-highway applications. An additional consideration was that SCR requires regular refilling of an on-board Diesel Exhaust Fluid (urea) tank. Operators of off-highway equipment have consistently expressed a preference to avoid the additional cost, supply and refilling of Diesel Exhaust Fluid as needed for an SCR system. Cummins cooled EGR and Particulate Filter does not require this additional fluid.
