Why is running speaker wire from room to room a bad idea for a multi-room audio system?

Speaker wire carries an amplified (powered) signal which is susceptible to dramatic line loss. In other words, the shorter the speaker wire, the better the performance. For this reason when running multi-room systems the only proven method is to transport the audio signal on a line level (non-amplified) basis and place the amplifier locally within the zone. This permits using the shortest length of speaker wire possible and getting the best sound out of your equipment. Amplifiers need not be “on display” but are typically hidden in closets, cabinetry, etc.
