Why is Ron Paul scary?
Well, the Iraq war and the IRS are really big ones. Republicans claim to be for small government, but few of them take it to the degree that he does. He wants a REALLY small government. He’d oppose every single earmark and every single non-earmark program that wasn’t absolutely necessary. So he’s also called for abolishing the Federal Reserve. Nearly all economists think that this is tin-foil hat stuff. (Now I know why you were asking about the gold standard; I’d forgotten about Paul.) Even the most ardent conservatives recognize that the Federal Reserve helps smooth out the business cycle in a way that Wall Street could not accomplish on its own. He’s libertarian on social issues that most Republicans consider bedrock. It’s not that he’s for gay marriage, but he wants to get the federal government out of the marriage business entirely. Not only would that legalize gay marriage in so
