Why is Puerto Rico spreading misinformation about the jobs impact?
Puerto Rico politicians claim, without any substantiation, that Diageo’s move will cost the island as many as 400 high-paying jobs. But Diageo does not even own a distillery in Puerto Rico. Its rum is being produced by the Serralles distillery that produces rums for other brands and has other business interests. Furthermore, Diageo alerted Serralles three years ahead of the contract’s expiration that Diageo intended not to continue the contract so that this supplier could find other customers. The claim that Diageo is somehow responsible for 400 jobs being at risk is absurd.
