Why is protecting the wildlife and habitat at the Salton Sea so important?
A. The Salton Sea is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. It is a haven for more than 400 species of birds, over 50 of which are endangered, threatened or listed as “species of concern”. Incredibly, the Salton Sea is a home for 2/3 of all the bird species in the US, including the only Inland breeding colony for the endangered Brown Pelican. The Sea is also a critical stopover for birds flying from Canada to South America along the Pacific Flyway during the winter. Up to 200 million fish, and various endangered and protected mammals, reptiles, and plants live in and around the Sea.
