Why is project planning used?
Project planning is used to solve a complex problem, such as patients who are discharged are readmitted with complications, or to respond to a need to change a medication administration procedure to increase patient safety. An example is when an organization recognizes an increasing need for women s health services. A plan is then developed to design the program and implement it. Project planning is also used when staff are told to do something they do not want to do, such as when a unit is told beds will be increased but staff will not substantially increase. When this occurs, staff have to figure out how to work more efficiently and effectively and adapt to the increased number of beds with the resources that they have. Planning at all levels is cybernetic. It is not a neat, sequential process; rather, it has many interactive loops.
