However, prescribed burning following herbicide use can clear out undergrowth and speed recolonization by desirable plant species. What long-term plans exist to handle common reed?… The three-year Southern Watersheds Common Reed Project will help control more than 180 acres of common reed in Virginia’s Southern Watersheds. However, this only addresses a fraction of the common reed problem. This demonstration project will establish the framework for a long-term comprehensive interagency program to control common reed in the Southern Watersheds and other areas of the Commonwealth.
