Fire alone is not effective because the rhizomes and roots usually remain unaffected. However, prescribed burning following herbicide use can clear out undergrowth and speed recolonization by desirable plant species. What long-term plans exist to handle common reed?… The three-year Southern Watersheds Common Reed Project will help control more than 180 acres of common reed in Virginia’s Southern Watersheds. However, this only addresses a fraction of the common reed problem. This demonstration project will establish the framework for a long-term comprehensive interagency program to control common reed in the Southern Watersheds and other areas of the Commonwealth.
