Why is poverty and hunger concentrated in Latin America, Asia and Africa south of the Sahara?
These are regions of the world where: 1. Educational advancement is lowest. 2. Scientific and technological development is lagging behind and people have continued in the old-fashioned ways of doing things especially in agriculture and industry. 3. Gender inequality inhibits the participation of women in various economic activities. 4. Uncontrolled population growth increases pressure on available food supplies, arable land, habitable areas and limited employment opportunities. 5. Corruption among the leadership affects rapid development consequently, people remain poor and hungry. 6. Frequent occurrences of natural disasters like flooding, earthquakes, volcanoes, desertification and drought lead to poverty and hunger. 7. In some areas of the region, there is complete absence of natural resources. What can be done to reduce the level of poverty especially in the worst hit regions of the world? 1. Interventions to reduce the level of poverty differ from one region to the other depending
