Why is Port Charlotte, Florida, listed as a top retirement spot?
Despite the area’s high foreclosure and unemployment rates, the web site raved about the cheap cost of housing, proximity to parks, the climate and other perks in Port Charlotte. In particular, CNNMoney.com said “Port Charlotte offers top-notch sailing and medical facilities, has a Cultural Center with a 500-seat theater, and 42,000-acre Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, where nature lovers can go bird-watching, hiking and kayaking. The clinchers for retirees, the report says, are the lack of a state income tax, and homes that cost less than half what they did in late 2005, with a typical three-bedroom house costing $170,000.” Sources: http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20090909/BREAKING/909099947?
