Why is polygamy permitted in Islam, but polyandry is not?
In the Islamic family unit, the male is the person who usually makes the income to support his family. Therefore, a man will be more likely to be able to support more wives than vice versa. It is apparently still the general trend today despite feminist movements that majority women are still house wives and stay mainly at home. But anyways, back to why it is allowed. B/C men usually had the greater means to support, sometimes there are women who have lost their support one way or another and marriage would get them back on their feet. It maybe that the woman is a widow or is divorced. She might have accepted Islam and she cannot return back to her family or tribe b/c they would not accept her back. Either way, it is a good deed in Islam if a man marries a woman to relieve her of such burdens. Personally, I have seen such instances in my life where a woman could have used support.
