Why is phonics such a controversial topic?
A. Ignorance is the fuel that continues to fire the controversy. College instructors, as well as classroom teachers, are the products of an education system that has ignored research and reason as they relate to phonics. For the past several decades, most teachers have not received comprehensive instruction in the “useful” phonic generalizations as part of their undergraduate education program. Consequently, most classroom phonic instruction has been ineffective.
