Why is PC Backup any better than the University file-servers, or other portable media (e.g. CDRs and Zip disks) to backup my work?
File-servers The University provides file-servers for all users which are backed up, but due to limitations, can only offer a small amount of space (usually around 10Mb). This space is often too small to hold all the work of a user, so people have had to resort to storing work on the hard discs of local machines. The only backup solutions available before PC Backup has been removable media, or to hope and pray for no failures. Removable Media There have been two different sorts of removable media that may have unofficially been suggested by members of staff – Recordable CD’s (CDR’s) and Zip discs. None of these solutions are perfect as they can not be used to automatically backup PC’s at regular times, backup entire PC’s hard discs or enable easy disaster recovery complete with all the installed software packages and associated settings.
