Why is our gas at the pumps, a different price in every State?

While transportation costs do play a part in gasoline costs, I would agree that they are not the largest factor in the price differences. Gasoline is taxed on the federal, state and local levels. State and local levels vary resulting in different prices, sometimes in locations that are quite close to one another. So you can check out your local taxes to see if they are affecting the prices. Other things that can result in varying prices include refinery prices and discounts received or surcharges paid by the individual gas station owner. Gas station owners do not tend to have a high profit margin and so it is difficult for them to eat any extra charges they have to pay. Wisconsin’s Unfair Sales Act requires that retail sales of gasoline must be marked up at least 9.18% Also check out this government site for links.
