Why is organic cotton a better choice than conventional cotton?
Cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop in the world – accounting for approximately 25 percent of the world’s insecticides and more than 10 percent of the pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides and defoliants). This rapidly degrades soils, reduces biodiversity, pollutes watersheds and communities. The World Trade Organisation estimates 20,000 deaths and three million chronic health problems each year are the result of the use of agricultural pesticides in developing countries. Organic cotton production, on the other hand, replenishes and maintains soil fertility and promotes biodiversity – keeping communities, farmers and waterways healthy. Seems like a no-brainer to us!
