The Munich, Germany Oktoberfest had its beginning as a wedding reception for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Theresa. The wedding ceremony was held in September, but the party lasted for three weeks, ending in October. They ended up calling the annual celebration Oktoberfest. The Frankenmuth Oktoberfest has been sanctioned by the city of Munich, so we begin ours on the same weekend in September as Germany begins theirs, however, Germanys runs for three weeks. 2010 will be the 200th anniversary of the Munich Oktoberfest. Frankenmuth’s began in 1990.
