Why is ny called the big apple?
In the early 1920’s “apple” referred to the prizes given for the horse races at the many race tracks around New York City. On a trip to New Orleans, John Fitzgerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph, overheard jockeys talking about wanting to race on the “Big Apple” (New York City) race tracks.It is also said that jazz musicians started referring to New York City as the “Big “Apple” in the 1920’s and 1930’sIn an effort to increase tourism to the city, New York City officially adopted The Big Apple as its slogan in 1971.
