Why is nuclear power such a controversial subject?
There are two big reasons nuclear power is controversial. 1) Nuclear Waste 2) Nuclear Leaks Nuclear waste is left over material from fuel rods to enable fission for the generation of power. These spent fuel rods (usually uranium or plutonium) emit dangerous beta and gamma rays. Too much exposure can cause harmful illnesses or even death. Unfortunately, the waste takes thousands of years before they no longer pose a threat to humans. Where to store them is the big problem as no one wants them in their “backyard” (somewhere relatively close to their home). Right now a giant underground nuclear waste facility is being built in Nevada. It is highly controversial. Nuclear leaks as in radiation escaping from the power plant causes people just a much fear if not more. While nuclear leaks are unlikely it can happen. The most famous cases are Chernobyl in Russia and Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Nuclear power plants are also a terrorist target where some group of Jihadists could in theory
