Why is November 11th election day?
Maybe you are confused because November 11th is “Remembrance Day” in Canada. This day is comparable to your “Memorial Day” I believe, but it was instituted in the last century when our ties to Britain were stronger. It is the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month when “Taps” rings out. Oddly, it’s a semi-holiday–government offices, banks, etc. are closed so employees can attend ceremonies; but businesses and schools are still open. Usually elementary classes either participate or observe. And wreathes are placed in certain spots, e.g. in front of the town hall, in memory of all our people who died in past wars and present (Afghanistan). October 14th is our day to vote for a new leader (Prime Minister). Our campaigns are only 36 days long. And no primaries.
